Education

Goals of Education & Outreach in NCTTP Centers:

  • Increase public awareness that torture continues in many countries in the world.

  • Increase public and professional understanding of the severe physical and psychological repercussions of torture.

  • Educate physicians and other health professionals, especially those in refugee minority health clinics, primary care clinics, and in medical school training, to accurately and effectively diagnose, evaluate, and treat torture survivors.

  • Educate health professionals to help them be able to sustain empathy and competence in caring for torture survivors in the midst of hearing the horrific stories of torture, trauma and severe suffering.

  • Help social service and other providers to better understand how to assess needs and to provide viable resources for survivors of torture.

  • Increase awareness among providers of the critical importance of understanding the torture survivor’s cultural needs, perceptions, and expectations.
