UConn’s School of Social Work and Research Collaborator with Khmer Health Advocates
Dr. Berthold is an Associate Professor at UConn’s School of Social Work, a longtime research collaborator with Khmer Health Advocates, and Chair of NCTTP’s Research & Data Committee. She has worked with torture survivors since 1987 in the US and in Asia and has testified extensively in U.S. Immigration Court as an expert witness. She served as a therapist with the Program for Torture Victims (PTV) based in Los Angeles from 1998 to 2011 and, for most of those years, as PTV’s Director of Research and Evaluation. She has conducted National Institute of Mental Health-funded research examining the prevalence of mental and physical health consequences among Cambodian survivors and has published widely. She has served on the Torture Journal’s Editorial Advisory Board since 2016. The National Association of Social Workers selected Dr. Berthold as the 2009 National Social Worker of the Year for her work with torture survivors.
